THE MALIA EARRINGS
THE MALIA EARRINGS
This summer I took an online course studying the history of an original matriarchal and queer culture- The Minoans. The Minoans lived non hierarchically on the the island of Crete in 1800BC. There is historical study that shows they worshiped an earth god, participated in hallucinogenic ritual, had no gender binary and created incredible art depicting bees, octopus and transgender warriors. I was deeply moved by learning more about this incredible prehistory and would highly recommend the work by scholar Chiari Baldini.
Perhaps the most famous piece discovered from their Tombs is The Malia Pendant . It is known the Minoans worshipped bees almost as their god. Honey was incredibly significant in their culture- as they used it for ritual, preservation and the making of wine. It is also believed they modeled their collective society after the hive and looked to bees as representation of a communal culture. There is so much more to say about this but I am just giving you the cliffs notes.
Basically there were queer nature freaks dancing high off of bee juice on an island 3000 years ago and these are our ancestors that can teach us a thing or two about how we should actually be living.
I wanted to honor them by making my own version of the Minoan Bees.
-I sculptede These earrings from wax and casted them in bronze
-They are beaded with vintage metal and brass beads
-they hang from a gold fil hook
-the earrings are 2” wide
